The Boston Red Sox on Thursday confirmed the signing of outfielder Cody Ross to a one-year contract and said right-hander Scott Atchison was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. The $3 million deal for Ross was first reported on Monday, when he told The Associated Press in a text message he still needed to take a physical.
