A person with knowledge of the negotiations says the Boston Red Sox and right-hander Vicente Padilla have agreed to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Monday because the club hadn’t formally announced the deal. Padilla has a chance to compete for the fifth spot in Boston’s rotation.

The Boston Red Sox avoided salary arbitration with catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia by signing him to a one-year contract, the team announced Sunday. Terms of the deal were not released, although the club did say it was not a guaranteed contract.
